It's important to protect the South Okangan BC "pocket desert" as there's nothing like it in Canada & this area is home to more species at risk than anywhere else in BC. Please sign the petition at www.okanaganpetition.org Writing a letter is even better. WCWC advocates creating a National Park in the South OKanagan Similkameen region. For more info., read on or check the website

Our Greatest Conservation Opportunity: Protect Canada's Desert, Grasslands and Ponderosa Pine Forests in Southern BC!

Currently, Canadians are being presented with one of the most exceptional conservation opportunities in our history. The BC and federal governments have agreed to undertake a Feasibility Study for a potential national park reserve to protect the desert, grasslands, and Ponderosa pine ecosystems of the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys in southern British Columbia. The local residents and the millions of Canadians who've visited the area know it is perhaps the most beautiful region of the country. Whether the national park reserve becomes a reality - or a lost opportunity - depends on YOUR input and the input of all Canadians.

This region, around the towns of Osoyoos, Oliver, Keremeos and Cawston, has more species at risk than any other region of BC. Canyon wrens, white-headed woodpeckers, badgers, California bighorn sheep, tiger salamanders, spadefoot toads, pallid bats, spotted bats, scorpions, and rattlesnakes all inhabit the area. A national park here would encompass a greater diversity of ecosystems than any national park in Canada - 6 of BC's 14 major ecosystem types ("biogeoclimatic zones") are found in this little region.

National parks are very rare - there are only 7 national parks in BC, in contrast to over 1000 provincial parks and protected areas here. National parks tend to be much larger than provincial parks and have the highest standards of environmental protection. A national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen region would be the greatest conservation opportunity for an area that is the greatest conservation priority in Canada.

Anyone who lives in North America knows that national parks greatly enhance local economies by increasing tourism revenues and providing local jobs, not to mention increasing the environmental quality of life for local people and all Canadians.

This proposed park - a once in a lifetime opportunity -could very well be derailed by vocal opposition forces unless YOU speak up to the political decision-makers!

Stop Coastal Oil Development in BC!

The threat of coastal oil and gas development looms over BC's wild and beautiful Pacific coast. For over thirty years there have been both provincial and federal moratoria in place to protect Canada's Pacific coast from oil and gas development. Currently, the BC government is intensively pressuring the federal government to lift their moratorium in order to open up the Pacific coast to oil and gas development by Chevron and Shell.
Coastal oil and gas development would seriously harm our marine ecosystems, fishing and seafood industry, and whale-watching industry through pollution and seismic testing (sonic blasts in the ocean that kill and harm marine life). At stake is the ecological integrity of our Pacific coast and the livelihoods of thousands of BC citizens that depend on these traditional coastal assets. We need your help to protect Canada's wild Pacific coast from inappropriate, dirty development.

More than seventy different interest groups ranging from tourism and fishermen to First Nations and environmental groups have joined together in the Oil Free Coast Alliance, and are on the provincial and federal governments to maintain the moratoria on any coastal oil and gas development off BC's coast. Here are some of the reasons:

75% of the respondents to the federal government's own public input process in the spring of 2004 supported keeping the moratorium in place.
The environmental and economic consequences of a major oil spill or blow-out in Canada's most earthquake prone region would be devastating to coastal communities, as was the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. Earthquakes 8.1 (1949) and 7.0 (1970) on the Richter Scale have occurred in the Queen Charlotte Islands region. Also, the fiercest winds in Canada, recorded at almost 200 km/hr and the resulting giant waves there could demolish oil rigs and tankers.
Major oil spills aside, inherent in coastal oil and gas production is daily chronic pollution, including the discharge of toxic drilling fluids and muds, chronic oil leakages, and small oil spills that are unavoidable. Toxic drilling fluids and muds include mercury and heavy metals like chromium and lead that contaminate fish and invertebrates.
In order to locate oil and gas deposits, seismic tests must be done using air gun blasts that send shock waves through the ocean that deafen whales, kill fish and invertebrates, and drive fish and whales long distances away from their feeding areas and migration routes.
Coastal oil and gas development runs counter to Canada's Kyoto Protocol commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrocarbon extraction and production accounts for almost 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
Few direct jobs would be created for coastal communities. Foreign work crews with the necessary specialized skills would be brought in from around the world, as is normally the case. Oil rigs would be constructed where labour is cheapest and the facilities exist, likely in South Korea or China. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) forbids any laws that give first dibs on jobs to local people.
Federal Government Under Pressure to Lift Moratorium

The BC Liberal provincial government started the process to lift the moratoria when they were elected in 2001. Prior to the January 23, 2006 federal election, the Federal Minister of Natural Resources Gary Lunn stated his interest in allowing for oil exploration off BC's coast, which would require lifting the moratorium. It's important to let the new Conservative government know whether or not you want them to maintain the moratorium on coastal oil exploration, drilling, and transportation in BC right now!

It is vitally important that we flood the Prime Minister's office with letters of concern about offshore oil and gas development. Each letter counts for hundreds of people who feel the same way but didn't send in a letter. This is an issue that affects all Canadians.

1. Do you want Canada to choose to unite with the US and Mexico into one North American (NA) economic bloc?
"A thought-provoking and genre-bending look behind the scenes of what might be the world's only underground DIY anarcho-feminist porn collective."

Made in Secret is an enthralling, inspiring and deliciously perplexing labour of love, made over the course of three years by a group of friends who wanted to make a documentary about their local anarcho-feminist porn collective. The only problem was, that collective didn't exist. And so, in order to make the film, they actually became the anarcho-feminist porn collective that they so passionately wanted to document. So is the resulting film a documentary? A fictional drama? Even the collective doesn't know anymore. And ultimately, it doesn't matter, because the movie isn't about what happened or what didn't happen --- it's about what's possible. And the possibilities are huge, transcending the quest for egalitarian porn and touching at the very heart of how we engage with others and with the world around us.
YoQiDa has been created by merging the stretching of yoga with energy enhancing Qigong, and when put to music the flow of dance.

As you may have seen and heard in the media this week, the ancient forests of Clayoquot Sound are facing an urgent threat. Please read below to see how you can help.

STOP INTERFOR'S LOGGING OF INTACT WILDERNESS VALLEYS IN CLAYOQUOT BIOSPHERE RESERVE

When intact and ancient wilderness is destroyed, it is lost forever.
Interfor (International Forest Products) is currently road-building and
cutting old-growth forest in an intact valley of Clayoquot Sound, on
Vancouver Island, BC. Intact temperate rainforest is globally rare and ecologically precious. Intact valleys are the reason Clayoquot Sound was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
WRITE TO:
Ric Slaco, Interfor Vice President and Chief Forester at ric_slaco@interfor.com

Tell him to stop logging intact valleys in Clayoquot Sound. Tell him you will not buy Interfor or Sauder wood because it is derived from ancient forest destruction.

Media Release For Immediate Release Monday February 7, 2005

CLAYOQUOT PEACE THREATENED:
INTERFOR BUILDING ROAD INTO INTACT VALLEY

Tofino, BC: Friends of Clayoquot Sound today discovered that International
Forest Products (Interfor) is building a logging road into a rare intact
valley north of Tofino. This marks the first time in 14 years that an intact
wilderness valley in Clayoquot Sound has been impacted by road-building and
falling of ancient temperate rainforest.

“Interfor’s road-building in intact rainforest valleys is an ecological
crime, and we are again hearing that local people will not stand idly by and
allow this to happen,” said Diego A. Garcia, forest campaigner for Friends
of Clayoquot Sound. “Undisturbed valleys are exceedingly rare on Vancouver
Island, where 75% of the original productive forest has been logged. We are
calling on Interfor to immediately cease all forestry activity in all of
Clayoquot’s intact valleys.”

The intact valley being logged and roaded is called Hesquiat Lake Creek, and
is part of the largest intact forest remaining on Vancouver Island. Hesquiat
Lake Creek is one of a handful of undisturbed, or intact, valleys that was
recommended for protection by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in 1996,
and that received recognition from First Nations and environmentalists as
being “Eehmiis” - meaning very, very precious.

“Interfor’s logging of intact valleys in Clayoquot Sound is a losing
proposition. Interfor is losing money in Clayoquot, paying miniscule
stumpage taxes ($0.25 per cubic metre), and has just permanently laid off
all but 2 staff in its local office,” said Forest Watch Coordinator Maryjka
Mychajlowycz. “At the same time, Interfor is causing the loss of globally
rare and ecologically precious intact valleys. Where’s the sense in that?”

In 2000, Clayoquot Sound was designated a Biosphere Reserve by the United
Nations’ Environmental, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in
recognition of the global ecological and cultural importance of the region.
“The ecological importance of Clayoquot Sound is critically linked to the
pristine valleys,” said Garcia. “It makes no sense to designate a United
Nations’ Biosphere Reserve and then log away the keystone features that make

Hello everybody!

I read about Tribe.net and thought I would check it out, and here I am. I was happy to see there was an Ottawa tribe because this is where I live. Well, technically I live in Aylmer (I'll never call it Gatineau) but when I first moved here I lived on Kenora Street in the west end. I only spent 8 months there but I consider that my neighbourhood of choice. I still go there to shop and get my hair cut!

Anyway, I have been here since December 2000 and have been in a few different working environments, mostly in the accounting field. Accounting is not my first love so it has been a bit of a struggle to be satisfied career wise.

I have also found it hard to meet new people and make friends, which is why I am here and I am posting this message. Back in the Maritimes, I have lots of friends and I miss them all dearly. From time to time they ask me when I am coming home and I can't answer them. I love living here in the NCR. I love everything about it. I just wish I could meet some people to hang out, have fun, and be there for them when they need me.

So, I am not sure how it works on here, but I would love to find some new friends and I hope to get connected soon.

I am not a psycho either, just a guy looking for pals in the city!

Hope to meet you all soon!

Your friend
